German Soldiers Work to Free Their Panzer

German panzer crew work to free their Panzer III from frozen mud, Ukraine, late 1941. Photographer: Artur Grimm. During the invasion of Russia, the Wehrmacht lacked necessary supplies, such as winter uniforms, due to the many delays in the German army's movements. At the same time, Hitler's plans for Operation Barbarossa actually miscarried before the onset of severe winter weather. Neither Hitler nor the General Staff anticipated a long campaign lasting into the winter. Thus, they failed to make adequate preparations for a possible winter campaign, such as the distribution of warm clothing and winterization of vehicles and lubricants. In fact his eastern army suffered more than 734,000 casualties (about 23% of its average strength of 3,200,000) during the first five months of the invasion before the winter started. On 27 November 1941, Eduard Wagner, the Quartermaster General of the German Army, reported that "We are at the end of our resources in both personnel and material. We are about to be confronted with the dangers of deep winter." Also of note is the fact that the unusually early winter of 1941 cut short the rasputitsa season, improving logistics in early November, with the weather still being only mildly cold.

Panzer IV of Panzer-Abteilung 8

This slide is from the estate of Siegfried Keller, which belonged to Panzer-Abteilung 8. The Panzer-Abteilung 8 was formed in October 1943 as replacement for the destroyed Panzer-Regiment 8 and was assigned to 20. Panzergrenadier-Division. The detachment was established in late 1943, and there is no information about Keller's previous career. This tank, Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.G, chassis number 82849, was sent to the unit in May 1942. The entire surface is factory painted in Tropen 2 scheme, but inside of the hatches remain gray as seen, and it suggests that gray painted parts was assembled at the factory and painted in Tropen 2 before shipment. The gun tube was later installed, therefore the gray primer color is retained. The spare wheel at the front is in red primer but when you look at it closely the center hub is painted in Tropen 2. Other interesting features like red cross painted on the superstructure front, light gray fire extinguisher, etc.

Kübelwagen in the Mud

An unknown German photographer from Wolff & Tritschler captured the adventures of his Kubelwagen (type 82) on the eastern front in Ukraine during the Second World War, early March 1944. Volkswagen Type 82 (Kübelwagen) – a German military all-terrain vehicle, manufactured from 1939 to 1945, the most massive car in Germany during the Second World War. It went into serial production in November 1940 and was standardized in the Wehrmacht as Kfz.1. Produced for both the Wafen SS and the Wehrmacht.

Feldgendarmerie Controlling Traffic in a Muddy Road

Road?  Mud! A Wehrmacht Feldgendarmerie is controlling the traffic with his signal stick. Patched tarp of the truck is also interesting. The picture was taken in Southern Russia in 1942 from a photo album of Kraftfahr-Abteilung 562. What is interesting was the very white wall of the house we see in the middle despite of this messy ground. Cars, people... everything muddy and dusty, how can a house keep white wall? It is because the muddy road never reaches directly to the house. And as you can see, there is a grey stripe painted along the base of the house to avoid splashes of dirt on the wall in heavy rain. It’s still made everywhere in Europe today when the house is white.

Russian Tank Crew Surrender to SS Soldier

The crew of a Russian T-34 tank stuck in the mud surrendered to an NCO from SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Wiking" during the 1943 battle in the Eastern Front. Although it suffered heavy losses in the Battle of Kursk, the Wiking Division achieved an excellent reputation, even earning the grudging respect of the Soviets in several battle reports for its pugnacious fighting spirit (Soviet commanders were always concerned to learn that their troops were facing the soldier of the Wiking Division). In October 1943 the division was reformed yet again, and emerged as a fully fledged panzer division. The significance of this should not be under estimated. Considering the disdain shown for many of the foreign volunteer units by their German masters, the fact that a predominantly 'foreign' division should be accorded panzer division status and equipped with the latest tanks was a tribute to the regard in which it was held. The 'Wikinger' were fast attaining an elite status to equal the best of the original Waffen-SS divisions. This picture was first published in SIGNAL magazine, October 1943 edition.

Tiger from sPz.Abt.506 in Russia

Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger (8,8 cm L/56) Ausf. E (Sd.Kfz. 181) of schwere Panzer Abteilung 506 in Russia, 1944. Note that both the MG 34 machine gun is coated in the red clothing to keep the dust out of it (and the 8.8cm KwK 36 L/56 main gun is covered also). An awful lot of dust in Summer on Russian roads! This heavy tank has all steel road wheels that were not used in 1943 (before January 1944 rubber rimmed wheels were used). It advance with all the hatches open - and 4 out of 5 crew (except the driver) got out of the armored, probably to cool off. This photograph has been retouched: look at the shadow of the gun and the "fork" at the end of it!

German Soldier with Muddy Helmet

This out of focus image of a soldier (Heeres Gruppenführer) with a muddy helmet (he must have been packing fudge) in Russia (1941) is being sale in German ebay for 109 Euros! There are some screwy people out there on eBay buying German WW2 color slides with more money than sense these days!
