Mules-Drawn Gebirgs AA Gun

Athens in 1941. This mules-drawn 2cm anti-aircraft gun, which is rarely seen, bears the markings of the German 1. Gebirgs-Division. The Gebirgsjäger are not immune to air attack and have their own anti-aircraft guns to keep the skies clear. They use the 2cm FlaK38 anti-aircraft gun because it is light and mobile, ideal for the rough terrain that they normally fight in.

StuG in the Acropolis Athens

Sturmgeschütz III StuG 40 moving in the streets of Athens, Greece, against the backdrop of the famous Acropolis hill, and the Parthenon temple that stands above it. This photo was taken in 1943 - when Greece was still occupied by the German troops - and was first published in the SIGNAL magazine in the early 1944 issue. However, this one StuG did not belong to the Sturmartillerie unit of the Heer (Army) or Waffen-SS, but belonged to the Luftwaffe (Air Force), precisely V.Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung / Panzer-Artillerie-Regiment / Panzer-Division "Hermann Göring". In 1943, this Luftwaffe's sole armored unit was operating in the Mediterranean region, primarily in North Africa, Sicily and mainland Italy.

Greek Propaganda Poster

Color slide group of Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 5 in Greece, 1941. A very nice poster grasped the interest of the photographer. March 7, 1941 is the day the British expeditionary force arrived in Greece. The Germans attacked in April and overwhelmed them. 'Aera' is a traditional Greek battle cry going back to antiquity. The distinctive shoes with the woolen pom-pom are Tsarouchia, traditionally worn by the Evzone, the famous light and mountain infantry
