Heldengedenktag 1942

Heldengedenktag in the year of 1942, which was held at Berlin on 15 March 1942. In Germany, the rough equivalent of Memorial Day and Armistice Day is known as Volkstrauertag. This word does not translate well into English. One rough literal translation would be People's Mourning Day. In 1935 after the Nazi takeover of power, they renamed Volkstrauertag as Heldengedenktag, which is roughly translated into English as Memory of Heroes Day. Heldengedenktag became a significant propaganda event in Nazi Germany. After 1945, the use of the term Heldengedenktag was abandoned because of its close association with the Nazi government.

Heroes Remembrance Day 1940

Heldengedenktag (Heroes Remembrance Day) 1940 on Unter den Linden boulevard in Berlin. Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler, accompanied by Reich Marshal Hermann Göring, Grand Admiral Erich Raeder and Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, greets the honor battalion of the Wehrmacht marching past. March 10, 1940. In 1919, the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge) proposed a Volkstrauertag (people's day of mourning) for German soldiers killed in the First World War. It was first held in 1922 in the Reichstag. In 1926, Volkstrauertag became a feature on what Catholics considered Reminiscere (the second Sunday of Lent.). On 27 February 1934, the National Socialists introduced national holiday legislation to create Heldengedenktag ("Day of Commemoration of Heroes"), cementing the observance. In the process, they completely changed the character of the holiday: the emphasis shifted to hero worship rather than remembering the dead. Furthermore, five years later the Nazis abolished Buß- und Bettag as a non-working day and moved its commemoration to the following Sunday, to further the war effort. Joseph Goebbels as Propaganda Minister, issued guidelines on content and implementation, instructing that flags no longer be flown at half-mast. The last Heldengedenktag was celebrated in 1945. Großadmiral Baton Presentation for Erich Raeder

This picture was taken by Hugo Jaeger above Battleship Tirpitz anchored in Wilhelshaven in 1 April 1939, and the occasion was Adolf Hitler's presentation of the Großadmiral (Grand Admiral) baton to Erich Raeder, Oberbefehlshaber der Kriegsmarine. It is possible that the man front row on the left is Konteradmiral Günther Lütjens (Führer der Torpedoboote), although the nose does not seem quite right. The one giving the naval salute is Vizeadmiral Wilhelm Marschall (Befehlshaber der Panzerschiffe), while the one two to the right of him, with the goatee, is Admiral Rolf Carls (Kommandierender Admiral Marinestation der Ostsee).
